Brainstorming

Hello everyone.

I hope you guys are having a fantastic summer and have many ideas to contribute to SPEL this year. We have many ideas that will be discussed in person when everyone gets into town. The number 1 priority right now is running the "Busted: know your rights" lecture we had last year. That is a great way to get people interested and involved in the club. Also we need to come up with strategies for targeting the incoming freshmen. Please use this blog as a place to brainstorm ideas. The successful "Busted" event last year was Andrew's idea, so anything can happen.

One idea of mine that I think is very important to the success of the club is having a polished website as a centralized source for information pertaining to the club. On it I would like to have information on past speakers, pictures, video, calendar, contact information to officers and members.

I want to bring SPEL out into the open this year making it controversial and a lot of fun. SPEL does not have to be a dry academic club. If it is not fun it won't be successful. I am thinking of doing some trips during the year. I am adament about having a camping trip and a beach retreat. The beach retreat is very doable and economical, however the camping trip will require a little more planning, but has the potential to be a lot more fun. Also on the radar is having SPEL mixers and low key informal get togethers, whatever you take those to be.

What I'm saying is that this is everyone's club and everyone's responsiblity to make sure it is totally off the hook. The club can do anything you want it to, within reason, but we just need to get a dialog going so we can have an awesome time this year.

Make sure everyone at the mixers has a fake ID.

Perhaps you should even have a representative from the ACLU on hand at all times

Don't forget to smite everyone with the SPEL scepter of justice upon entry. There will be NO DOUBLE SMITING if you decide to leave and return. BTW, the post I made on Brainstorming was a draft that I made in July so when I finally posted it today the date appeared as if it was written before Chris' post. Confusing? Quite.

Did you guys ever decide on a scepter? If so, is it jewel-encrusted like the one of my dreams?

I went to one of the Foundation For Economic Education (FEE)'s seminars this summer. (Guillermo was there!) One of the lecturers was Dr. Paul Cwik from Mt. Olive U. He demonstrated the Austrian Business Cycle Model which debunks the Keynsian IS/LM model we all suffered through in Macro. I asked if he would be willing to come to SPEL and give the same lecture, and he said sure.

We could bill it as IS/Lwrong, or whatever.

Maybe we could even arrange a debate?

Oh, and does anybody else want to read Rothbard's Man, Economy, and State? Has anybody read it that would be willing to lead a reading group, if only online?

Campus Cinema is showing V for Vendetta tonight. Wouldn't that be an excellent time and place to recruit?
